Olympic champion Simone Biles made gymnastics history Sunday when she donned a teal leotard in honor of survivors of sexual abuse.
Biles, 21, wore the outfit, which she designed herself, while winning her fifth title at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Boston. She was the first woman in 24 years to be awarded the top score in each event of a national championship.
In explaining her outfit color choice, Biles, one of the many victims who stepped forward earlier this year to accuse former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar of sexual assault. said teal symbolizes the color for survivors of sexual abuse.
“[The color] is for the survivors,” Biles told The Associated Press. “I stand with all of them and I think it’s kind of special to unite [people].”
