Students at Washington Global Public Charter School in Southwest recently held a school-wide showcase to celebrate black history.
During the showcase that included field trips to Brazilian Embassy and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, students read poems, shared raps, performed dance routines, reenacted historic speeches and participated in a step show.
The full student body also voted on performances they felt were the most impactful, with winning students receiving special recognition.
UN Conference Representatives
Shining Stars Montessori Academy Public Charter School students Kadar Muir and Donovan Simpson recently represented their school community at the 2017 Montessori Model United Nations Conference in New York City.
Playing roles as ambassadors from their chosen countries of Antigua and Barbados, the student delegates studied issues, gave a speech, prepared draft resolutions, negotiated with allies and adversaries, resolved conflicts, and navigated the Model UN Conference rules of procedure.
They also had fun making new friends and visiting New York City.
Educators of the Year
The Office of the State Superintendent of Education will celebrate D.C.’s best teachers and school leaders Friday, May 5 at the third annual DC Educators of the Year Award ceremony.
Held from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park, the ceremony will include a formal reception that honors the 2017 DC Teacher of the Year, 2016 DC History Teacher of the Year, finalists for the 2014-15 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, and the finalists for the 2016 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
WUSA-TV (Channel 9) news anchor Andrea Roane will emcee the event, which will include a welcome from State Superintendent of Education Hanseul Kang, as well as presentations by student performers from both public and public charter schools in D.C.
‘H.E.R. Story’ at Phelps
The group known as “H.E.R. Story,” at Phelps Architecture, Construction and Engineering High School in Northeast, serves as an after-school club where more than a dozen girls meet once a week to discuss their feelings as well as how they’re performing academically and how things are going at home.
They also sometimes study together, plan community service events, and share snacks and juice.
Shayla Stafford, an instructional coach at Phelps, said she launched started H.E.R. Story — “Helping Empower Regalness” — about four years ago, after realizing “the need for a space for girls to come together, talk freely and support one another.”
Standout Schools
School Without Walls, Woodrow Wilson High School, Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, Duke Ellington School of the Arts and McKinley Technology High School were named by U.S. News as the “5 Best DC High Schools,” while School Without Walls ranked #84 nationally.
‘Mighty Greens’ Sale at Eastern
The “Mighty Greens” program will sponsor a popup sale Saturday May 6 at Eastern Senior High School (1700 E Capitol Street NE) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Through the “Mighty Greens” program, food that Eastern, Cardozo High School and the University of the District of Columbia students grow and sell at local farmers’ markets, comes from their school gardens and greenhouses.
As a youth-led, garden-based, entrepreneurship program, Mighty Greens engages teenage students in caring for edible and native plants while growing their business.
Among the vegetables and spices students grow in the year-round program are kale (both Dinosaur and Red Russian), collards, tomatoes (Cherry, Defiant), lettuce, cilantro and chives.
