AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia, the largest Medicaid-managed care organization in D.C., joined forces Saturday with Howard University Hospital and the Howard University Faculty Practice Plan to provide the community with health screenings in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

During the “Howard University Hospital Summer Tune-Up” on the HU campus, attendees benefited from onsite health screenings, such as blood pressure, glucose, dental and body mass index (BMI) screenings. They also had the opportunity to engage in pre-scheduled physical, well-child and/or prostate exams.

“This was an excellent opportunity for the community to receive important medical check-ups and helpful tips on how to stay well, and to interact with physicians and other health care experts outside of the office or hospital,” said Shelly McDonald Pinkett, chief medical officer for Howard University Hospital.

“These types of events give us a better understanding of the fact a member’s perception of their health care provider is extremely important and essential to developing a relationship based on mutual trust,” said attendee Karen Dale. “It’s amazing to see how a change of scenery and perspective often provide the comfort necessary for someone to open up about something as personal as their health.”

The fun-filled day also included a live DJ, a variety of food and health snacks, as well as a masseuse for those in need of a little extra relaxation; children enjoyed a moon bounce, face-painting as well as various games and prizes.
