Collective Voices' Poetry Extravaganza 2013
MLK, Jr. Memorial Library
About this event
Please join Collective Voices, CAAPA (Coalition for African-Americans in the Performing Arts, Inc.) and the MLK, Jr. Memorial Library as we pay tribute to Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the 17th Annual Poetry Extravaganza at the MLK Library. This free celebration takes place from 1 to 4 PM on Saturday, January 19, 2013, in the Great Hall of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library at 901 G Street, NW., Washington, DC.
With over 20 guest artists, poets, African drummers, dancers, musicians and presenters, the 2013 Poetry Extravaganza promises to be a great celebration! WHUR host and on-air personality, Jacquie Gales Webb, will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies. DC poet, author, educator and literary activist, E. Ethelbert Miller, will serve as Poet of Distinction. This year's Guest Poets are Patrick Washington, Kavon Ward and Ross "Mosaic" Cooper. Welcome remarks will be offered by DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities Exec. Director, Lionell Thomas and Prince George's Arts and Humanities Council Exec. Director, Rhonda Dallas. The fabulous Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers will kick-off the celebration with festive African drumming and dance, followed by the renowned Soprano, Karen Wiggs-Wilbanks, who will render a classical rendition of "Lift Every Voice." And there's so much more. We only need you to make the celebration complete!
Poetry Extravaganza is typically attended by more than 150 Washington area residents, and has been cited by Washington, DC Poet Laureate, Dolores Kendrick, as one of "Washington, DC's premiere annual grass roots cultural celebrations honoring Dr. King." We invite you to join us as we pay tribute to one of our nation's greatest drum majors for justice. We look forward to seeing you there.
