The Washington Mystics returned from a four game road trip where they went 1-3, winning only one game to defeat the Los Angeles Sparks 75-63. The Mystics had a 24-point advantage over the Sparks but had to fight back in the fourth-quarter for the win on Sat., July 11 at Verizon Center.

“I think we're just trying to learn how, when we get teams down, how to put them away and keep them away,” said Mystics forward Marissa Coleman. “We got a little lax there, didn't push the ball and let them slow the game down. We needed to play with more energy.”

The Bulldog’s point guard from 1975-79, Brooks succeeds Luke D’Alessio, two-time Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Coach of the Year, whose contract with the school was not renewed after the team posted a 15-13 record for the 2008-09 season.

“This is a unique situation and the fact that Bowie State is my alma mater makes it even more special,” Brooks, 53, said. “It’s like going home to a family reunion. [It’s] a tremendous honor to be back.”

Wimbledon, England (AP) -- Serena Williams beat her sister Venus 7-6 (3), 6-2 on Sat., July 4 for her third Wimbledon title and 11th Grand Slam championship. In the fourth all-Williams final at Wimbledon, Serena came out on top for the third time by out-serving her sister, lifting her game in the tiebreaker and dictating play throughout the second set.

By taking the title for the first time in six years, Serena stopped five-time champion Venus from becoming the first woman to win Wimbledon three years in a row since Steffi Graf from 1991-93. The Williams sisters have won eight of the 10 Wimbledon singles titles this decade.

When Venus slapped a backhand return into the net on the fourth match point, Serena fell to her knees on the grass. As always with Williams vs. Williams matches, the celebrations were relatively muted. The two sisters embraced at the net, with the 29-year-old Venus patting 27-year-old Serena on the back.

It was Serena's turn to hold up the women's trophy, the Venus Rosewater Dish.
