Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival South Carolina State defeated Howard 31-0 to spoil the Bison senior day weekend on a cold, and snowy Sat, Oct.29 at Greene Stadium.South Carolina State took advantage of some early mistakes to build a 17-0 halftime and then put the game away with two fourth quarter scored en route to the 31-0 win. The defeat marked the first time Howard had been shut out since October 2009, a span of 25 games. It was also the Bison’s ninth straight loss to South Carolina State. “We came out very flat, had some turnovers and some things did go wrong,” Bison Coach Gary Harrell said. “But those things are controllable. We just have to hold onto the football and not turn it over. That’s where the ball game was lost.” The Bison defeat was because of 11 penalties and poor weather conditions. “Once you get ahead, under those conditions, you basically make them play catch-up,” South Carolina Coach Oliver “Buddy” Pough said. “And they had to play catch-up in a situation where they could only execute about half of their game plan. So it was a big deal for us to get ahead early.” In this photo Howard (QB) Greg McGhee is tackled by S.C.State (DL) Malcolm Reed as he tries to make a first down during the first quarter. / Photo by John E.
