"Our communities along the District line have been plagued with cross-border criminal activity," Harrison said. "District of Columbia Council Member Yvette Alexander, who represents the border areas of Northeast and Southeast D.C. and I, along with our respective police departments, have been working to clean up some of the cross-border criminal activity which includes prostitution."

WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia schools officials are offering to create three new middle schools with different specialties in Northeast

According to a local report, the plan was offered on Nov. 16 to parents who have complained about the lack of education options in Ward 5.

The plan involves closing three preschool through 8th grade campuses created in 2008 by then-Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee. That concept has been unpopular with parents.

Parents say enrollment in the combined elementary and middle schools isn't high enough to generate enough funding for middle school programs.

The plan calls for opening a new stand-alone middle school for arts and world languages, a preschool through 8th grade school with an International Baccalaureate program and a science and technology middle school in part of McKinley Technology High School.

car_towedNow that the District will no longer be arresting drivers whose registrations and license tags have expired, officials at Triple A still want to work with the city to ensure that non-complying vehicles won't be towed and impounded.

Currently under D.C. law, vehicles can be automatically towed from city streets if  registrations have been expired for more than 30 days. That applies to vehicles regardless of where they have been registered, and noncompliance can result in a fine as well as hefty towing charges.

BUS-CyberMonday_12-1-11_320NEW YORK (AP) – U.S. shoppers seem to be just as enthusiastic about shopping on their computers and smartphones on Cyber Monday as they were about finding deals over the weekend.

Online sales on Cyber Monday, which was started in 2005 by a retail trade group to encourage Americans to shop online on the Monday after Thanksgiving, were up mid-afternoon by 15 percent from a year ago, according to data from IBM Benchmark. Meanwhile, sales from mobile devices were up 7.4 percent. The group did not give dollar amounts.

The Cyber Monday numbers point to Americans' growing comfort with using their personal computers, tablets and smartphones to shop. Over the past few years, big chains like Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, have been offering more and better incentives like hourly deals and free shipping, to capitalize on that trend. It's important for retailers to make a good showing during the holiday shopping season, a time when they can make up to 40 percent of their annual revenue.

On Monday, Amazon.com offered its bigger, more expensive Kindle DX for $259, or $120 off the regular price. The Express clothing chain was giving 30 percent off and free shipping on all online orders. And Wal-Mart, which has been calling the holiday "Cyber Week" in ads, was offering an LG 47-inch (119-centimeter) LED TV for $879, or $320 off the regular price.
