Friendship senior Jaron Gillespie had to overcome many academic hardships during his high school career. As he stood at a podium on National Signing Day, the struggles were clear worth the effort.

“I came from nothing, a year ago I wasn’t even thinking about football. Coach [Rahim] helped me change my life. I worked a lot to be good academically,” said Gillespie.

National Signing Day is the day that high school seniors announce the schools they have chosen to attend, and play football for. Held this year on Wed. Feb., 4, it has become a day of celebration from high school athletes across the country, many of whom were heavily recruited by some of the top colleges in the country.

Number 10-ranked Marquette used a 9-2 run late in the second half, hit five free throws in the final minute and pulled away from Georgetown for a 78-72 win over the Hoyas in front of 17,686 fans on Sat. Feb. 21 at Verizon Center. Georgetown was a top 10 team last month, but the Hoyas (14-11, 5-9) have lost seven of nine while grappling with their own tough slate of games.

On a day in which the school celebrated the 25th anniversary of its only NCAA championship team, the Hoyas failed to get the kind of victory needed if they are to secure a berth in this year's tournament. The Hoyas paid tribute to the 1984 title team at halftime, with eight players on hand to receive commemorative bowls. Star center Patrick Ewing delivered a recorded message via the giant scoreboard.

Howard University’s new lacrosse coach, UVA grad Jessica Morgan, arrived two weeks ago to much anticipation. When the former head coach resigned after just one year, several team members said they felt discouraged and frustrated.

“I got the call eight months ago. I knew upon accepting the position that the program itself was struggling, disorganized and lacked proper direction. But I believed that it had a lot of potential, and if put into the right hands, could develop into a very successful one,” Morgan said.

Despite the program’s lack of recognition and trouble recruiting players, Morgan plans to seek out and bring in talent to further build the program. She believes that the name itself, Howard University, is a viable resource.
