Washington Informer Pastor Melvin Robinson, with his wife, Cheryl, celebrated his 10th year as pastor of Master’s Child Church in District Heights, Md. Photo by Ed Laiscell
When Melvin Robinson, Jr., had to assume the pastorate of the Master’s Child Church 10 years ago at age 31, it was a fledgling congregation of 45 men and women who expressed their dedication to “seeking to grow in the grace and knowledge of God”. Initially, Robinson expressed “reluctance” about accepting the leadership of the ministry that his father, Bishop Melvin Robinson Sr., had founded 19 years earlier.

“My father had already told me about the call on my life. I didn’t see it, but he saw it,” Robinson said.

Today, the Master’s Child Church has a membership of 700 and occupies a 19,000 square foot building in District Heights, Md. More than 800 people gathered in the church’s sanctuary on Sun., July 19 to celebrate with Bishop Robinson on his 10th anniversary as pastor.

The man who made prayer cloths and a financial interpretation of the Bible a staple of Christian faith, Frederick J. Eikerenkoetter II, died Tue., July 28 in Los Angeles, Calif. Eikerenkoetter died from complications resulting from a stroke in 2007. Known for his garish clothing and jewelry, Eikerenkoetter is remembered for his witty remarks, “The Bible says Jesus rode on a borrowed ass. But, I would rather ride in a Rolls Royce than to ride somebody's ass!”

While Eikerenkoetter preached a message of material prosperity to his majority middle-class and low-income African American flock, his beginning in Ridgeland, S.C. were humble.

Do you think that you can open a combination safe if you need 10 of the numbers required to open the combination lock, and you only have nine? The lock will never open until you know and use the 10th number. It’s the same with living your life as a Christian. In this case, let’s call the 10 numbers, The Ten Commandments.

“You must not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For the Lord your God, is a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate him, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Him and keep His commandments.” (Exodus 20:4-6)

On a recent Sunday afternoon, cars jammed the parking lot at The Fellowshipp restaurant, and people were lined up out the door. Gospel music drifted from speakers and the atmosphere inside was akin to a family reunion.
The ties, elegant hats and high heeled shoes were part of an unofficial dress code. Olivia Swinton, who had stopped by for lunch, said that she always sees people there that she knows.

“We're just leaving church and it keeps you in that spiritual place,'' she said.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported that creating a spiritual place for their clientele was Marc and Patrina Mosley's vision when they opened The Fellowshipp in July.

“It was a long process,” said Deacon Kenneth Jones, chair of the Search Committee.

“Three [candidates] eventually went before the church one at a time. We then held the vote process that required the person to receive two-thirds of the vote. Rev. Nutall prevailed after the third vote process.”
