Wizards face 76ers in their home opener on Tue., Nov. 2

ATLANTA (AP) -- Joe Johnson scored 14 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter and the Atlanta Hawks remained unbeaten, holding off Washington 99-95 in the Hawks home opener Saturday night, Oct. 30.

After opening with wins at Memphis and Philadelphia, the Hawks gave the home fans their first look at a team that features largely the same roster as last year's playoff team but a new motion offense under rookie coach Larry Drew.

The game was tight all the way, but Johnson finally put away the Wizards after struggling the first three quarters. His biggest shot came with less than 3 1/2 minutes remaining, when he stepped back behind the arc to hit a 3-pointer over Al Thornton right along the sideline for an 89-84 lead.

“We appreciate the patience of our fans as we moved through this process. We were in discussion with Julie about a joint gm/coach role as well as our philosophy moving forward. It was the 2010 season home opener for the Wizards who returned to the Verizon center after losing two games on the road.John Wall had 29 points, 13 assists, nine steals and eight turnovers in his home debut, as the Washington Wizards beat the Philadelphia 76ers 116-115 in overtime Tuesday night at the Verizon center in Washington D.C.

“He’s got an unbelievable will to win. I mean he wills the team,” said Wizards head coach Flip Saunders. “He got us in trouble tonight at times but he fought through it and was able to make some big plays at the end. I think that his ability in getting nine steals in a game just changes the complexion of the game so much at that end and it got us aggressive.”
