The Washington Freedom, who played the first game of a doubleheader with D.C. United, brought women's professional soccer back to RFK Stadium for the first time in six years. Missing from the team was star forward and team captain Abby Wambach, who was called up for an international game against Canada by the U.S. Women's National Team.

“The first half was an emotional battle for us, a bit of a roller coaster to get into it and feel confident and comfortable,” said Sky Blue FC Interim Head Coach Kelly Lindsey.

“The second half, we did a great job of reorganizing a few things - getting players in a few positions that they felt more comfortable, and I think their confidence grew through the half. We stuck together as a team and created some situations where we could have won the game so we have to really look at it like we had a positive experience today. We learned a lot on and off the field and I think we came out with a moral victory for our team.”
