The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) hosted the Winter Futsal (indoor soccer) Championships on Sat. March 21, at the Riggs LaSalle Community Center in Northeast. More than 300 players of all ages, on 21 teams from across the District and beyond, participated in the daylong event hoping to earn the District of Columbia Cup. Futsal is an indoor version of soccer, played by two teams of five players, and is played on a lined, hard court surface. Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regulation soccer ball. The rules create a game with emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.
