Buy a Ticket, Please! World Cup Needs You!
Special to the NNPA from the GIN
(GIN) - With less than two months before the World Cup of soccer kicks off, FIFA - the sport's governing body - and the South African local organizing committee are pleading with South Africans to buy the remaining 500,000 tickets that have been made available.
Fewer than the 450,000 foreign visitors initially expected will be coming to the games - Africa's first World Cup. "This final ticket phase is very important," said FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke at a press conference in Soweto. "We will not want to give that picture of empty seats to the world; all will need to be done in these last days."

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has suspended Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger for six games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. The suspension is conditional, and the number of games Roethlisberger actually misses will depend on how the quarterback conducts himself before and during his suspension. Goodell could reduce the number of games to four based on Roethlisberger's conduct.
The suspension comes on the heels of Roethlisberger' second sexual assault charge in as many years, although no charges were filed in either case.
A 20-year old college student accused Roethlisberger of sexual assaulting her in a nightclub in Georgia in March, but local prosecutors declined to bring charges, apparently due to lack of evidence that would allow a case against Roethlisberger to be proven in court. The quarterback is also being sued by a woman who alleged that she was sexually assaulted by him at a hotel in Lake Tahoe in 2008. Roethlisberger denied those allegations, and has filed a countersuit.
The Steelers are reportedly listening to offers to trade Roethlisberger, and have re-signed former backup Byron Leftwich. The Steelers also have quarterbacks Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch on the roster.
In a letter to Roethlisberger, Goddell explained his decision.
""There is nothing about your conduct in Milledgeville that can remotely be described as admirable, responsible or consistent with either the values of the league or the expectations of our fans," Goodell wrote.

Just when it appeared the controversial job interview conducted by Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland in which he asked then NFL prospect Dez Bryant if his mother was a prostitute was behind him, a sports Web site got a hold of the Cowboys receiver's mom who feels one more apology is owed.
"No, he has not called,'' Angela Bryant told AOL's FanHouse Monday. "I think he should have. Why wouldn't you do that?
"I don't know how you can point such a finger and act in that way and anything that is worth any good come your way.''
Ireland released a statement last week in which he admitted he used, "poor judgment,'' during the pre-draft interview and said that Bryant accepted his apology during a phone call. Dolphins owner Steve Ross said on Friday that he would look into improving the interview process and that he considers the matter "closed.''

The Washington Capitals finished the NHL’s regular season with the best record, and appeared to have an excellent chance at a long playoff run, and were considered favorites to win the Stanley Cup. Instead, the Number One seeded Capitals were bounced from the playoffs in the first round by the eighth-seeded Montreal Canadiens in a seven-game series.
The Capitals started the series with a home loss in game one, followed by three straight victories, but could not close out Montreal in game five, their best chance of finishing off their first round opponents. With the momentum swinging back to Montreal’s favor, the Canadiens defeated the Caps in the final three games of the series, and will now go on to the second round to face the Pittsburgh Penguins.
