Local Fans Share Mixed Emotions about NFL Lockout
National Football League (NFL) owners and players reached a ten-year deal this week ending months of negotiations and worry of a shortened or canceled season. Redskins fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing they won't have to find a new way to spend their Sundays, but a feeling of disillusionment still lingers.
"The bottom line is that it should have never taken 135 days," said James Williams, Jr., 49, a District resident. "I understand that it's a business, but at the same time, you have to use common sense when you're doing business. I'm a sports fan and I love football, but when you have things like this, it makes you wonder what these guys are thinking."
Good Counsel Graduate Poised for Big Season

Last season, the 18-year-old started as a linebacker for the University of Florida Gators, made the Southeastern Conference Freshman All-American team, finished the season as Florida's second-leading tackler and also landed on the SEC freshman academic honor roll.
"You have to humble yourself and not expect anything to be given to you. Work hard for everything that you want. The amount of work that you put in will decide the results," Jenkins said.
This fall, Jenkins will take the reins as Florida's defensive leader. Thus far, he's already named to several 2011 award watch lists and some NFL scouts predict that he will be the best outside linebacker available if he decides to enter the 2012 NFL draft.
According to Maurice Jenkins, his son's talent was apparent at a young age.
He first spotted the competitive streak in his eight-year-old son at a Prince George's County skating rink.
"He must have fallen down about 100 times. It didn't matter how many times he fell, he brushed his little legs off and kept getting back up," the proud father said. "To me, that spoke to his character and determination."
Kevin Durant, the NBA two-time all-star was instrumental in getting the Los Angeles Drew League to come across the USA to face the local Goodman league. Durant who scored 44 points was named game MVP. It was standing room at Trinity College on Sat.Aug.20. At least three hundred basketball fans had to be turned away while the fortunate ones inside the gymnasium enjoyed the atmosphere of an evening of NBA type All-star basketball. When time expired the Goodman league defeated the Drew league 135-134."It just shows how many people really love the game of basketball," said Milwaukee Bucks guard Brandon Jennings, who scored at team-high 38 points in a losing effort for the Drew League. "It was no money involved, no nothing. Just pure showing love to D.C."
"It was exciting, really just for the community and people who can't come to NBA games and see their favorite basketball players play head to head," said Wizards center JaVale McGee, who scored 21 points for the Drew League. "We definitely sacrificed. Everybody put their all into it, to get out here."
"That's something players only dream of. To play with so many great players at one time, it's a blessing man. To play in my home town, too, you can't beat that," Durant said.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Friendship Public Charter School is proud to announce that the Friendship Collegiate Academy Knights will play Taft Tech in Cincinnati, Ohio, on ESPN U. The game will be shown at 11 a.m. on Aug. 28 and is part of the second annual ESPN High School Football Kickoff.
"We are honored to be invited to participate in this exciting event. This is a chance to show the country Friendship's great tradition of student athletes," said Donald Hense, chairman of Friendship Public Charter School. "Our goal for the football team, and all of our student athletes, is to make sure they are prepared to be stars on the field and leaders in the classroom."
Friendship Collegiate Academy is striving to once again make Washington, D.C., a leader in developing scholar athletes. Last February, 14 Friendship students signed full college football scholarships. Students signed with leading colleges and universities including Columbia, Morgan State, Pittsburg and Ohio universities.

Ms. Hester's community impact is so powerful in the opportunities she offers to youth, adults and the community at large, all on a voluntary basis, such as, incorporating the community to be apart of activities that becomes life time careers.
Team Takeover prevails. / Courtesy phortoTeam Takeover from D.C., ended its summer season ranked third in the nation for the 2011 season, and head coach Keith Stevens was proud of this year's squad.
"The season went well and the kids got great experience this summer," Stevens said. "The kids received great exposure which will enable them to receive college scholarships."
To recap the summer season, the Takeover participated in the Nike Elite Basketball League, comprised of 64 of the top 17 and under, AAU teams in the country.
The Takeover went undefeated in league play, finishing with a record of 15-0. Pool play was held at the Boo Williams Complex in HamptonVa., the Fieldhouse in Frisco, Texas, and the HAX complex in Los Angeles.
However, the Takeover suffered the loss of one of their top scorers when 6'6 Arnaud Adala Moto suffered an injury in a tune-up game at the Germantown, Md., complex prior to the championships at North Augusta, South Carolina.
In the championship round, the Team defeated Ohio Red, 73-68, with four players in double figures.
Patrick Holloway (Paul VI) led all scorers with 18 points. Jonathan Tshibuy (Bullis) chipped in with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Jermai Grant (DeMatha) added 14 points along with Stags teammate James Robinson, who finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bison (1-5) are coming off a 52-32 loss to North Carolina A&T. The Spartans (2-5) are led by senior running back 5’10 DeAngleo Branch who ranks second in the MEAC with 699 yards on 155 carries and six touchdowns.
The Bison are led by sophomore running back Charles Brice. The 5’10 190 Brice has rushed for 403 yards on 76 carries and five touchdowns. Wide receiver Willie Carter. The 6’3, 200-pound junior from Denmark, S.C. leads the team with 16 receptions for 282 yards. The kickoff is set for 1pm at Greene Stadium.
