D.C.'s Premiere All Vegan Cafe Rolls Out New Menu and Look During Vegan Awareness Month
WASHINGTON, DC— Everlasting Life Cafe, the District's premiere all vegan restaurant -- which provides wholesome, delicious and economical all vegan foods to conscious consumers in the metropolitan area -- celebrates its fifth anniversary and Vegan Awareness this month.
Located in Northwest at 2928 Georgia Ave., within the Shaw and Howard University communities, Everlasting Life Cafe opened in August 2007 after its previous owner, a local health food co-op, agreed to transfer ownership to two members.
New owners, Vernon and Mickiyah Woodland, native Washingtonians and long-time vegans, took on the task of transforming the simple interior into an inviting all vegan cafe that now draws consumers from all parts of the country. The cafe's patrons range from students and young professionals to celebrities such as actress Cicely Tyson and entrepreneur Russell Simmons.
According to the Woodlands, both 26 years-old at the time and the parents of four boys, the job of revamping the business was difficult initially, because they did not have access to many funding options. "We had to rely solely on the support of our patrons to help us build what we have today," says Mickiyah, whose parents briefly owned a successful vegan café in Bermuda.
Vernon Woodland, a graduate of the culinary arts program at MM Washington in D.C. and the New England Culinary Institute in Vermont says, "The café buys mostly organic vegetables from local vendors and we definitely strive to keep our prices affordable for everyone. It is important for these options to be present and available for those seeking an alternative dietary lifestyle, whether it's for health reasons or their compassion for animals and the sustainability of the earth."
In the coming months, the couple plans to expand by adding several new items to the menu. They will also be offering a regular brunch menu on Sundays.
"Every Tuesday, we will introduce new menu items with specialty themes like a taste of Italy, Mexico, India, and Asia," says Mickiyah. "We are going to be offering more frequent cooking and food preparation classes and will also be increasing our online presence by having cooking demonstrations available on the internet."
