New Analysis Finds African Americans More Religious than the Rest of the Nation

According to a detailed analysis conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life, African Americans are significantly more religious than the rest of the American population. Included in the study’s findings are data which show Blacks are more likely to be affiliated with a particular religion, attend religious services regularly, pray frequently and say that religion is important in their lives.
Specifically, the survey found that 79 percent of African Americans say religion is “very important†in their lives. This contrasts with just 56 percent of adults in the general population who say the same. The most religious segment of the Black population is African American women. Approximately 84 percent of them told the pollsters religion is very important in their lives and 59 percent said they attend church at least once a week.

The overwhelming majority of Blacks (78 percent) belong to historically Black Protestant churches; 15 percent are members of evangelical Protestant churches; 5 percent are Catholics and 1 percent has adopted the Islamic faith. Only one-half of 1 percent of African Americans says they are atheists. This compares with 2 percent of the general population who do not believe in God.
