The PGA Tour’s Nationwide Tour returns to the Country Club at Woodmore in Prince Georges County for the 2009 Melwood Prince George’s County Open. This is the third year for the Country Club at Woodmore to host this prestigious golf tournament, which will be played the week of June 1-7. The course at Woodmore is ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic region by Golf Digest. The tournament will feature 156 top professional golfers competing for a purse of $675,000, with the winner collecting $122,000.

“The growth of this tournament over the last two years has been phenomenal,” said Teo Sodeman, Tournament Director. “The Golf Channel airing our event speaks to just how far it has come in such a short time.”

The 2009 Melwood Prince George’s Open is one of just five Nationwide Tour events broadcast on The Golf Channel, which is seen worldwide. It will be broadcast live in its entirety June 4 through June 7, bringing a level of exposure that County Executive Jack Johnson sees as a plus for Prince George’s County.

“We will be seen world wide for four days, and have people from all across the country hear about Prince George’s County,” Johnson said.

“They will see us in the perfect setting, with beautiful homes and some will know that we’re a predominately African American community. I think it will set the right tone for economic development for our county.”

In addition to being a top notch golf tournament, the Melwood Prince George’s County Open is a week-long community event. It will feature a high school tournament and junior golf clinic, multiple Pro-Am events, a Military Honorary Observer program, Community Leader Award presentation, and various social events. New for this year will be a Chamber of Commerce event and a kid’s zone. Children 12 years old and under and military personnel get into the tournament for free.

“We want to try and make this a family atmosphere, a place where the whole family can come and enjoy themselves,” said Sodeman, “not only seeing golf at its highest level, but also have a place where the kids can enjoy themselves.”

Former Washington Redskin Brian Mitchell will serve as tournament host. Mitchell, who still holds 13 NFL records, said “Prince George’s County is a great area with a rich and diverse culture. I am honored to serve as the tournament host. Melwood is an outstanding charity that does wonderful things for the community, and the Woodmore course is on of the best in the region.” The tournament benefits Melwood Horticultural Training Center, is a nonprofit organization serving more than 2,100 people with disabilities, providing job training, employment, housing and recreation in the Washington D.C. area.
