On a balmy August evening, hundreds of people gathered on the National Mall to pay homage to the legacy of a man who put his life on the line in the hope that others might be afforded equal opportunities under the law.
Harry E. Johnson Sr., president and CEO of the Washington, DC Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation welcomed guests who had gathered close to the sculpture, to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the memorial on Tuesday, August 28.
Those who attended the two-hour program listened intently to remarks by Robert G. Stanton, senior advisor to the Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar and District of Columbia Mayor Vincent C. Gray.
Gray, 69, told the crowd about the impact of the late civil rights leader's indelible legacy.
Organizers treated guests who stayed after officials' remarks to the 1990 movie, The Long Walk Home, a film that chronicled the lives of two Montgomery, Ala., women who helped champion the civil rights cause in the late 1950s.
