When D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray raises the speed limits in the Northeast section of the city near Benning Road and Interstate 295, drivers will be able to drive a little faster.

According to reports, the speed limit for Benning Road from Oklahoma Avenue to I-295 will increase to 35 mph. In addition, the speed limit on I-295 from Eastern Ave. to Blue Plains will increase to 50 mph. These changes could become effective soon.

However, Gray said because the new speeds "are consistent with safety," drivers should still expect speed cameras.  "We've had this study that is ongoing and thorough," Gray said in an interview. "There certainly could be more changes."
