An upscale retail boutique and wellness spa in Bowie, Md., owned by a 20-year retired Air Force veteran, opened its doors less than a year ago and is already giving back to the community.The bags also are a source of economic empowerment through sustainable income for local artists. "The World Advisory Company helped pair our boutique with retailer Harrison Heights for the Bags for Charity event. We think it's a good fit and a great collaboration [between two businesses] to help a wonderful cause," said Yvette Albury, owner of An Elite Boutique. "We're all about helping the community and the storefront helps us do that."
World Advisory Company Founder Alexander Johnstone helped An Elite Boutique and Harrison Heights come together on the project.
"Harrison Heights was looking for exposure and to increase the clientele, and since the two businesses are less than ten miles apart I decided to bring the two together to help impact and give back to the community," said Johnstone.
All proceeds from the auctioned bags will go to The Redeemed Christian Church of God Restoration Center's "This Too Shall Pass" program. The goal of this program is to help support individuals and families experiencing financial hardship who have become food insecure. Organizers of the event say the program is intended to be a temporary support until the individuals can get themselves back on their feet.
The Restoration Center's Food Bank collects and distributes food on a regular basis to individuals and families that are in need. The ministry also serves a hot lunch after their worship service every Sunday afternoon during 'fellowship hour' at 111 Centerway in Greenbelt, Md. to as many who come through their doors as a way to build community and establish relationships.
Organizers of the event say the evening also will include a networking component and presentation on charity and philanthropy.
"Donation amounts at the door would be great but we really want them to bid on the bags because that's what really counts. It's been wonderful working with Harrison Heights and the way they make their bags is wonderful, Albury said. "I'm glad we were able to be able to partner with them to make this event a huge success."
