WASHINGTON, D.C. – At-large Councilmember David A. Catania (At-Large), chairman of the Committee on Health, Mayor Vincent C. Gray and Council Chairman Kwame R. Brown are sponsoring a day of public events on Thurs., Dec. 1 at the John A. Wilson Building to mark World AIDS Day. They will also hold a press conference at 12:30 p.m. in the building's Atrium.
Among a slate of events which are all free and open to the public, are a mobile HIV Testing Bus that, in conjunction with the Department of Health, will provide HIV screenings and a Committee on Health Hearing that will provide evidence-based, unbiased education to physicians on the various treatments and pharmaceuticals available to treat certain diseases. A public education and awareness fair and another hearing surrounding "Seniors and HIV Legislation" will also be offered.
The District of Columbia's response to its HIV/AIDS epidemic has earned praise from public health and advocacy communities alike and, according to the most recent city-wide study, is showing significant improvement in key areas in combating the disease.
The events at the Wilson Building will be an opportunity for the public to learn about the disease, its impact on the community, ways to prevent the disease, and HIV/AIDS -related programs and organizations serving District residents.
