Raymond_Rec_CenterDistrict of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray and city officials recently held the groundbreaking ceremony for a new recreation center in Northwest.

The new facility attached to Raymond Elementary School will include an indoor gym, computer lab, fitness center and game room as well as a playground. It will replace the current Raymond Recreation Center which has been closed to make way for the new building in Ward 4.

The new facility, which is expected to be completed in a little over a year, is being overseen by the Department of General Services (DGS).

"Our goal for this project is not only provide a new recreation center for this community, but to also create an educational campus by connecting Raymond Elementary School to the new facility," Mayor Gray said.

City Administrator Allen Y. Lew added that the project is being designed to create a physical relationship between the recreation center and Raymond Elementary School. "Once completed, there will be a natural connection between the center and the school," said Lew.

Construction for the site begins this month, with the new center also featuring a seniors room and elevator.
