A celebration of Frederick Douglass' 194th birthday will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Feb. 11 by the National Park Service.
Douglas, a slave abolitionist and lauded orator, was a Maryland native who was born into slavery in 1818. He fled bondage and spent the rest of his life fighting for justice and equality for all people. His home at 1411 W. St. in Southeast is now known as the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site.
The celebration will include period music by "Washington Revels", a performance by actor Fred Morsell, discussion on Douglass that will be moderated by Edna Greene Medford, professor of history, Ph.D. and recognition of students who won the National Historical Society's Frederick Douglass oratorical contest.
The public event is free.
