New Report Shows Increase in Child Poverty East of the River as Other Areas Improve

Sekou Biddle, candidate for D.C. Council At-Large, called on the DC Council to focus on the city's most vulnerable residents in response to today's report from DC Action for Children showing an increase in child poverty in wards seven and eight.

According to Biddle:

"Today's report from DC Action for Children makes it clear that we have not done enough to ensure that all residents, regardless of ward, income or political connections, are benefitting from the continued economic growth in our city. The fact that even more children are now living in poverty in Wards seven and eight shows that our elected leaders have lost sight of their duty to protect our most vulnerable residents, the children of the District of Columbia. These numbers are unacceptable for our nation's capital and we must all recommit ourselves to tackling the root causes of child poverty such as poor education, unemployment, and the high cost of housing in the District.

While my opponent has been voting against small businesses and holding hearings on boxing matches, I have been hearing from residents from across the District about the lack of faith they have in our elected leaders. DC Action for Children's report makes it clear that this crisis of faith is not misplaced. It is time for our Council to get back to work and focus on improving the lives of all of our residents, not just campaign donors and political friends."

Hokanson has often been wtfaesul with our taxpayer dollars. i.e. spending a ton of our tax dollars on the community center when we were told it was free. Also, the so called free field of dreams was far from free with all the cost to us tax payers. Let's add the ice skating rink financial fiasco and the questionable expenditure for parking near the BMX track. How about the raises to workers above cost of living and the huge raises to herself. No wonder she cannot guarantee a decrease in taxes.

I know we have to work to scruee the council funding, but would it help if readers of the Champion were to cobble funds together to sponsor an animal at the same time? It really would be terrible if the animal park were to close.

We all know that btgdeus are going to be a lot tighter in the future and we are going to have to make tough decisions on spending but before every decision to spend your money, Councillors will have to ask themselves can I justify this to residents. This is a very good motto not only for the councillors and the goverment but for people in general to base their life on .
