More than 80 protesters showed up Tuesday at the downtown offices of Pepco in Northwest Washington to voice their opposition to the utility company's proposed rate hike. The protesters threw cake all over the front entrance of the offices.
The incident occurred at 11 a.m. and police took swift action. Protesters cleared the area and no arrests were made.
"We are not going to let them damage property in this city," D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said. "If they want to peacefully protest, that's fine. But you can't block a building's entrance and you can't destroy property. It's not going to be tolerated."
