 Cherry Blossom Bombshells take on DC DemonCats in title bout


The DC Rollergirls and thousands of their dedicated fans will pack the DC Armory as the DC DemonCats and Cherry Blossom Bombshells face-off for the 2009 championship title on Sat. May 9 Door will open at 4p.m., an exhibition bout will tke place at 5p.m., with the Championship Bout scheduled for 5:45p.m. A win on Saturday will mark the first league title for either team. Scare Force One was league champion in the first two seasons.

Midfielder Rodney Wallace enjoys the moment with Jaime Moreno after he scored his first goal of the game. Moreno has been named MLS Player of the Week for Week 7. In Saturday’s 2-1 win over FC Dallas, the Bolivian scored both of United’s goals as D.C. jumped to the top spot in the Eastern Conference with a 3-1-3 record (12 pts.). This is Moreno’s seventh MLS Player of the Week award.

D.C. United fans are organizing a rally in support of a stadium plan for the club prior to D.C. United’s home game on Sat. May 9 against Toronto FC. Planned events include a demonstration in Lincoln Park at 3:30 p.m., followed by a march to RFK Stadium and a dual tailgate party, hosted by La Barra Brava and the Screaming Eagles, lasting until the scheduled 7:30 p.m. kick-off.

Though fans are encouraged to use metro to arrive at the park, shuttle busses are being hired to transport fans from Lot 8 at RFK Stadium to the demonstration gathering point from 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

The PGA Tour’s Nationwide Tour returns to the Country Club at Woodmore in Prince Georges County for the 2009 Melwood Prince George’s County Open. This is the third year for the Country Club at Woodmore to host this prestigious golf tournament, which will be played the week of June 1-7. The course at Woodmore is ranked eighth in the Mid-Atlantic region by Golf Digest. The tournament will feature 156 top professional golfers competing for a purse of $675,000, with the winner collecting $122,000.

“The growth of this tournament over the last two years has been phenomenal,” said Teo Sodeman, Tournament Director. “The Golf Channel airing our event speaks to just how far it has come in such a short time.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- It's all even between the Nuggets and Lakers, with Denver's thin air awaiting these two teams in their breathless Western Conference finals showdown.

The Nuggets earned an elusive playoff victory over the Lakers, 106-103 Thursday night to end an 11-game winless streak against Los Angeles in the playoffs dating to 1985.

The best-of-7 series resumes Saturday with Game 3 at Pepsi Center, a mile above sea-level Los Angeles.

Vick at Virginia Courthouse for Probation Meeting

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) -- Michael Vick walked into a federal courthouse in Virginia on Friday May 22 to meet his probation officer, ignoring questions from waiting reporters about his life under home confinement after being released from a federal prison this week.

The suspended NFL star arrived at the Norfolk courthouse at 10. a.m., his first-known public appearance since he left the Kansas penitentiary undetected early Wednesday and drove cross-country to arrive in Hampton early Thursday, where he began serving two months of home confinement.

The former Atlanta Falcons quarterback is serving a 23-month sentence for a dogfighting conspiracy.

TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- With his casket carried in a horse-drawn carriage, Wayman Tisdale was remembered Thursday as a basketball star and gifted musician by thousands of mourners swaying to gospel tunes.

The body of the former Oklahoma All-American traveled three miles from the funeral home to the downtown arena.

About 4,000 people, including former NBA players, pop musicians and former coaches, attended the memorial. There was live jazz music, clapping and shouting in honor of the man who died last week at 44 after a long battle with cancer.

Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Dunn had RBI singles in the eighth inning, helping the Washington Nationals end a seven-game skid with a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday night.

Washington's Craig Stammen retired the first 12 batters he faced in his big league debut, but couldn't hold a 3-0 lead. The 25-year-old right-hander, who had his contract purchased from Triple-A Syracuse earlier in the day, didn't allow a baserunner until Adam LaRoche led off the fifth with a double over the first-base bag.

Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has named Randy Wittman and Sam Cassell as assistant coaches on the staff of Head Coach Flip Saunders. Per team policy, terms of the contracts were not released.

"Randy and Sam will be excellent additions to our coaching staff, and both will be instrumental in helping us achieve our goals,” said Saunders.


“Randy brings a wealth of experience as a former head coach of two different teams and is very familiar with my system. I always regarded Sam as a coach on the floor during his playing days, and he brings instant credibility as a three-time NBA champion and a proven winner.”

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- NFL teams looking to hire general managers may soon be required to interview at least one minority candidate.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday the league's owners discussed expanding the Rooney Rule - which already applies to coaching openings - during the final session of their two-day meetings in South Florida. No vote was taken, though Goodell indicated any changes could be made soon.

"It's a judgment I will make with the diversity committee," Goodell said.
