Blacks Bashing Barack

President Barack Obama has attracted a number of high profile Black detractors. As insane and self-hating as it might in truth be, there are certain Black politicians who can be expected to beat-up on the President as he seeks re-election.

Mr. "Nine-nine-nine," the pizza mogul, Herman Cain has nothing good to say about the White House incumbent.

Cain is joined by Reps. Allen West [R-Fla.] and Tim Scott [R-S.C.], and by former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, who was in fact himself thrown under the bus by the GOP after he planned their recent convention in Tampa, and then was not even credentialed to attend.

What is amusing is the fact that a boatload of so-called "progressives" are all on the President like "white on rice," bashing the man up and down, without offering anyone in the way of an alternative should we heed their anti-Obama messages.

The most prominent Black critics are media personality Tavis Smiley and Princeton professor and "public intellectual" Cornel West. The sad part about these two is that their own objections are rooted in the most trifling and petty personal reasons imaginable.

My friend Tavis – for whom I won multiple national "Salute to Excellence" awards from the National Association of Black Journalists when he had his show on National Public Radio – was first miffed back in 2008 when the President declined his invitation to appear at one of his vaunted town hall meetings during that year's campaign. Then Senator Obama sent his wife Michelle to represent him. Tavis felt that he had been "dissed" [disrespected] because the President did not show up in person. Classic symptoms of an ego trip by someone who is a legend in his own mind.

Tavis, get over it. Obama did not attend the NAACP convention this year. You don't see N-Double-A President Ben Jealous sucker-punching the President because he didn't fit in an appearance before the nation's oldest and largest Civil Rights organization, do you?

Dr. West's beef is just as petty. He got "the jaws" when he could not get a VIP invitation to the Inauguration at the last minute for his "Auntee" or some other member of his family. West then remembered that the President loud talked him once in public at some event, walking up to him, asking him why was he [West] speaking against him [the President].

West's former Princeton U. colleague Melissa Harris-Perry however, is unforgiving of West's intellectual basis for hatin' on the President. "... In a self-aggrandizing, victimology sermon deceptively wrapped in the discourse of prophetic witness, Professor West offers thin criticism of President Obama and stunning insight into the delicate ego of the self-appointed black leadership class that has been largely supplanted in recent years," she wrote in a scathing article for The Nation. Ouch. That hurts.

Let me be clear. I am not carrying one drop of water for the President's re-election. On the other hand, I confess, I have not had anything good to say about any of this year's Republican candidates, and will continue to think about them just about the same way they think about me, but I am not a partisan. I say what Brother Malcolm X once said: "I'm not a Republican. I'm not a Democrat. I don't even know if I'm an American."

What's more ironic is that now, Black folks are arguing among ourselves again about who is the "blackest," defined by whether or not we support a man everyone knows was not elected to be our "Moses" to deliver us from "bondage," but rather to be the POTUS – President of the United States.

The last time I checked the job description was not rewritten when President Obama took office, in order for him to be our "savior." Instead – to complete the biblical metaphor – the 44th President sits in the seat occupied by the "Pharaoh" in our past. And at least four or five of the previous 43 presidents actually owned Black people as slaves. And of course Willard Mitt Romney says he can relate to Black folks if he's elected because his ancestors once owned slaves.

Mind you, Tavis and Cornel have to stand in line alongside folks from the Tea Party when they want to bash Barack. But at least the Tea Party is hoping their criticism leads to their White GOP candidate winning the presidency Nov. 6.

Meanwhile, we have these Black "West" guys – both Republican Allen West and self-described progressive Cornel West – taking swings at the Black President. Allen says Black voters are on the Democrat "plantation" and that he [Allen] is our liberator who will lead us to freedom if Romney is elected, while Cornel says we're on the plantation all right, but he doesn't have any electoral alternative.

Go figure.

If you are not an American...then leave. This article was written with no depth. Black people do not have to support the President JUST because he is black (1/2 black). (I dont feel he has to deny or downplay being mix, although when we look at him, we see a black man). We as a people have diverse values and one size doesn't fit all.

I am black. Yes, BLACK. I did not vote for President Obama in 2008 nor will I vote for him in 2012. People tend to take our vote for granted, just like this poorly constructed article. We must hold our elected leaders accountable, REP/DEM/or IND they must earn our votes!

Let put a black head on all the black bodies and put them on there proper shelf. African-Americans in this line and American-Africans in the other.

    Bro. Askia Muhammad
    Washington Informer

As-Salaam Alaikum and good afternoon, Bro. Askia,

I just finished reading your piece, “Blacks Bashing Obama”, dated yesterday, Sept. 13, 2012. I have known you for many years and I am old enough to remember when you used to write for the Nation of Islam’s then newspaper, Muhammad Speaks. However, I am disappointed but not at all surprised by your piece and its lack of historical context, analysis and deeper review of political issues concerning why some African people of the political Left and other Leftists in this country publicly criticize Pres. Obama and his policies.

First, I strongly object to you making it seem like those of us that publicly criticize Pres. Obama as having nothing better to do but offer simple bashing of the president. This is not the case; we simply offer our political views and analysis of what the president has done while in office and the great harm his policies have done to thousands of people, both here in this country and around the world. Your piece does a great disservice to your readers by not offering more information for them to reflect and study. As the writers of Black Agenda Report http://www.blackagendareport.com, have stated many times for the past four years, Pres. Obama is indeed not the lesser of evils, but simply the most effective evil because there are things he has done that an old, White male Republican president would not be able to get away with, certainly not without massive protests.

Perhaps you should explain to your readers what it means for Pres. Obama to redefine the legal definition of war and how this is a great historical accomplishment of the absolute worst kind. For example, after bombing the northern African country of Libya for several months, Pres. Obama told congress it did not come under the War Powers Act because it wasn’t a war because supposedly no U.S. troops were killed. Does the law say only congress has the power to declare war? But we all know our beloved brother, Muammar Gaddafi and thousands of others were killed in Libya by the savage, U.S.-directed NATO bombing of the country, aided by the reactionaries in the country. And let’s not forget, Pres. Obama aligned himself with these same reactionaries, some of whom actually lynched other African people in the area of Misurata. Don’t you think your readers may want to know this? How does a so-called “peace” president, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, actually pursue war? How does a “peace” president drone-bomb five countries at the same time, Somalia, Libya (which are in Africa), Yemen, Afghanistan and Pakistan, all Muslim countries and you yourself are a Muslim? Shouldn’t your readers know this as well? Or do you think your readers can’t handle the truth?

My last example, regarding health care, as Black Agenda Report executive editor Glen Ford stated in his debate with Dr. Michael Eric Dyson on last Friday’s Democracy Now!, Pres. Obama’s health care bill was actually the original idea of the right wing Heritage Foundation from back in the 1980s. With a small amount of fact checking, you will find that this was in essence a Republican bill in 1993, Bob Dole made it his in 1996, then Mitt Romney tweaked it and made it his while governor of Massachusetts and later, Pres. Obama tweaked it again and made it his, but it was never universal health care for all/single payer, which many people in this country have demanded, many had hoped for. But shouldn’t your readers also know what role the insurance and pharmaceutical companies played in Pres. Obama’s health care bill, when it will take effect, what procedures will it cover and which procedures and/or preexisting conditions will it not cover? Viagra? Birth control pills? Reconstructive surgery after a serious illness or accident? Medically necessary physical therapy and/or mental health counseling? Dental work?

Though I did graduate study towards a M.A. degree in Communications, the sad state of journalism, especially most of the African-owned press in this country, reminds me why I’m glad I’m not working in this profession. Telling the hard truth, advocacy journalism, fact-checking, etc., simply are no longer valued, encouraged, affirmed or defended.

OH MY HOW FAR WE SLAVES HAVE COME!

      
