Winner is ...Gov. Chris Christie

When the dust settles on this year's presidential election, the real winner will prove to be Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Christie is finishing his first term as governor and will be seeking reelection in 2013. He has built a reputation as a rare no-nonsense, straight-talking politician. The public claims they want an honest politician, but when they see one, he gets roundly criticized for being honest.

The governor has been given high marks for his response to the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, which devastated both New Jersey and New York City. He is a living example of how a politician can set aside partisanship for the betterment of the people. The way he and President Obama joined together to comfort and help those affected by the storm was remarkable in light of the polarization of our body politic.

Christie served as one of Mitt Romney's most visible and staunchest surrogates. Christie can be very partisan, but seems to have the maturity and wisdom to know when to put partisanship aside. This seems to have led him to be in trouble with many in the Republican Party.

Christie has been effusive with his praise of President Obama's handling of the storm. The president, in turn, has been just as effusive in praise of Christie.

As a top surrogate for Romney and with the election less than a week away, many in the party seemed to be taken aback at this "love-fest" between to politicians from opposite parties. Many Republicans thought Christie was providing a huge "political" boost to Obama at a critical time in the election.

Christy made it perfectly clear to media outlets that his focus was totally on getting help for his people without any political considerations. But, Fox News would not accept the governor's words and proceeded to ask him about whether he would tour the state with Romney. In classic Christie style, he smacked the Fox anchors right across the lips with a stinging rebuke, "I have no idea, nor am I the least bit concerned or interested. I've got a job to do here in New Jersey that's much bigger than presidential politics, and I could care less about any of that stuff... If you think right now I give a damn about presidential politics then you don't know me," he said. The Fox anchors looked like a deer in the headlights.

In other interviews Christie said, "The federal government response has been great. I was on the phone at midnight again last night with the president personally," he told NBC's "Today" program.

During a press conference Christie said, "The president has been outstanding in this. The folks at FEMA ... have been excellent...I don't give a damn about Election Day. It doesn't matter a lick to me at the moment...I've got bigger fish to fry."

Wow! We heard a national Republican who actually believes that there is a legitimate role for the federal government to play in our lives. Maybe Christie is that "adult" the Republican Party needs to get our party back on track and to tone down some of the craziness happening within the party – "legitimate rape," "the president is lazy," "the president should learn how to be American," etc.

In a country that has become hyper-partisan to the point of total gridlock, you have a politician who is determined to put the people first, even if it helps the opposition party right before a major election. Did Christie want Romney to defeat Obama in the election? Certainly he did. But it was more important that he got his people the help they needed.

Without a doubt, Christie was the true winner of this year's election. And the Republican Party can win, too, if it adopts his road map for balancing partisanship with governorship. This is the only way to get the GOP back to relevancy.

Chris Christie was exposed for what he truly is and that is cowardly bully. When the chips were down he ran like a frightened school boy into the arms of his elder Obama. He proved that he couldn't hold his mud in a crisis. There was no need for him to grovel at Obama's feet. The money he needed was coming regardless of Obama. The photo op, the ogling, the effusive praise was either the cold calculation of someone trying to subvert Romney's campaign or that of scared little man.. I think it might be a combination of both.. either way Christie is dead as a Republican and really should run as a Democrat. He certainly fits the Democrat profile of slothful, cowardly, fat, a taker, an opportunist, a bully and a jerk...Democrats are welcomed to this joke..

If the governor was genuinely mature, or a genuine leader, he would not have been so knee jerk partisan in the first place.

His entire "support" of Mitt Romney was to launch personal insults on the president. That is NO WAY to show leadership.

And thanks to God, in the form of a hurricane, he had to "eat a lot of crow" while coming to realize that the President was in fact the leader Gov. Christie can only wish to be.

He may or may not be finished, but he really should dump the Republican party, offer a lot of apologies with acts of contrition, and maybe he has a future in politics.

While NJ and NYC are virgins when it comes to hurricanes, their aftermath, and cleanup, I come from a state with lots of experience where 3 category 3+ hit my home within 6 weeks one summer. It is a travesty the media attention and whining that I hear from the Northeast compared to the resources that never seem to make it to the South. But the NY metropolitan area squeaky wheel vocalization is what will get money driven there to get things done. Let me tell you that not one thing should be rebuilt on SANDBARS after the federal flood insurance program pays for those homes, they should be buyouts and sandbars should be left for day trips by boat or car to the beach for the masses, they are not appropriate places for $13million homes to be built and then the people repeatedly pay to replace, neither on Long Island or the Hamptons, nor anywhere else by the seashore-should be national seashore for the enjoyment of the people.

I like christie cuz he is a republican with common sense--looser drug laws, school choice and merit pay with pub teachers-- and spoke at the Cato awards dinner whatever for the political prisoner in china. Plus he is a straight guy; no political crap, demagogue, bs coming from his lips, like mitt, boehner, Ryan, etc

But Christie isn't a winner this time. He showed he likes top down, big govt control, like 90% of republicans. His only difference is he shows and expresses his support, unlike mitt and others no pose as small govt guys.

We don't need bipartisanship. That got us no child left behind, wars, and more debt--GOP went along with Obama trillion dollar deficit budgets and raised the debt ceiling.

    @ Obamney:

I am not responding to take sides for or against your opinion here. I just want to say that being rude only weakens whatever message you are trying to pass. Your message makes you look bad. Really bad, that is.

    Have a more peaceful day.

Governor Chris "Fat Bastard" Christie showed his true RINO colors by cozying up to Obama in the wake of Hurricane Sandy and helping him to defeat Romney. I belive that this morbidly obese wise-ass is finished as a Republican, although I'm sure that he has already made a backroom deal with Obama for either a cabinet position or a federal judgeship.

@Tothian - Maybe you should visit Jersey to see that clean up and normalization are moving at a snails pace. Pat him on the back after he actually fixes something. So far he's only proving to be a bigger bag of wind than hurricane Sandy.

You can't blame Chris Christie for being a True Leader in a natural disaster. He is to NJ during Hurricane Sandy, what Rudy Giuliani was to NYC on 9/11

If he played partisan politics, that would've had MUCH worse repercussions using his office and that disaster for political gain. What we got to see was a symbol of bipartisanship, unity, Americans coming together.

Chris Christie is the Greatest Governor in U.S. History.

    You got THAT damn right!

    Re-elect Chris Christie 2013!

Then elect him President in 2016!

    then re-elect him in 2020!

LOL - unless he runs as a D or an I he's finished - even then he's most likely finished. He looked weak - irrespective of the election. Like a punk kid on "Scared Straight" hanging on to Obama's belt loop for dear life. And now he's crying because Bruce Springsteen hugged him? Bed wetter comes to mind. Tough guy Chris Cristie lost all credibility.
