What's So Bad About Obamacare?

Whenever I heard someone repeat the term "Obamacare," I used to cringe. It was used as a way to insult the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA)—the major healthcare reform legislation signed into law by President Barack Obama. But maybe I'll soon stop cringing about the expression.

The idea was to make the law sound bad to the nation's nitwits in this country, who don't read, and who are hard to lead in the right direction, but easily led in the wrong direction, by pinning the President's name to it. There are tens of millions of Americans—most of them White—who are so bigoted, who are so closed minded, that they will vote against provisions and candidates who are in their own best interest, just because they don't want to see Black people gain any advantage whatsoever. These people would rather see the country fail, than to see Black people in general, and this Black President in particular succeed.

So we come to Obamacare, which is likely something that is good for the country. It will guarantee health coverage for patients with pre-existing conditions, which insurance companies before have been quick to deny. It will guarantee health coverage for college students until they are 26, under the health plan their parents have. And most importantly, it will extend health insurance coverage to an additional 30 million now uninsured people—7 million of whom are Black—and thereby reduce the nation's health care costs, by permitting previously uninsured persons to get regular medical treatment from a doctor, without having to wait to go to an emergency room after an illness has worsened and become more expensive to treat.

But now what I like about "Obamacare" is that the President and his supporters have now embraced the term. They say yes, "Obama cares." That will probably cause a lot of anguish for Republicans. They are well known—from House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), and up and down the GOP ranks—for opposing their own ideas, if and when Pres. Obama says he supports them.

Just think about so many provisions of the Obamacare law Republicans once supported. Just think about so many provisions in the tax plans and debt ceiling increase that Republicans once supported only to betray their own ideas when the President agreed to their terms. Just think about the long list of Republicans who said it's time to do away with tax give-backs to oil companies—the world's wealthiest and most profitable corporations—which Republicans agreed should be repealed six years ago. They have ignored their own mantra and in turn, abandoned their own principles today.

As far as Obamacare goes these days, the Supreme Court recently concluded three days of historic hearings on the ACA. It was the first time oral arguments on one case were held for three days in more than 30 years. If this right-wing Court decides to uphold the key provisions, then it's all over. Call it what you will, but it will still remain the law of the land.

"If you remember, the affordable care act was premised on the concept of personal responsibility," Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) said in response to a question from this writer in a conference call with reporters. "That each of us is responsible for securing good healthcare, keeping ourselves well, and therefore not only making sure we're cared for and our family is cared for, but that we're not costing our fellow Americans more in taxpayer money for emergency care services. So it's premised on this notion that we all have to take personal responsibility for our health."

That was historically a Republican argument, before it became a lynchpin of the ACA. "Remembering also that the United States is the only industrialized country in the world that allows its families to go bankrupt for seeking healthcare, and that we pay more per person for healthcare than any other country in the world, to have this law overturned would simply be so expensive for us as taxpayers, because we're gonna see our fellow Americans continue to seek healthcare, and they'll now be once again routed back to the emergency rooms," Rep. Becerra continued.

"Much will be done over the years to recognize that asking everyone to take on their own responsibility in making sure healthcare throughout this country can work, is not only constitutional, but it's what we need to go so we can compete with the rest of the world. So I think that the far-reaching ramifications of overturning of the healthcare law, is something I hope the justices understand goes way beyond their pay grade and I hope they recognize that the Constitution clearly would accommodate something like this historic health reform law of 2010," Becerra said

The problem with everyone is that they are not reading everything through. The ones that oppose the ACA are the ones that dont understand it in the first place. I am 54 and have been relatively healthy all my life. This past year I was diagnosed with uterine cancer. This is not something I did to get. I needed to have surgery, if this ACA gets repealed than the health care I get from my company could go away and I would not be able to afford health care for myself due to the cancer. This act allows me to have health care and I can afford it. The elderly would not be able to afford health care if they had to get it on their own because the republicans dont want to have this and want to get rid of Medicare would put them under their childrens care. There are so many idiots out there that dont know what they are talking about when they critisize their President. When other presidents have been in office, I have not seen them be so disrespected as I have with President Obama. The republicans made the comments before he was elected that no matter what he wanted they were not going to give it to him. They were also the ones that put in a lot of admendments to the health care bill that some of the ones complaining about. Most everything that has been negative has been done by the Republicans not by President Obama.

Are you out of you mind obama care is unconstitutional. The MACPAC in the plan is outragouse. Do you know you will be either offered or required by the government to have a chip inserted (which by the way can set off IED's) by 15 MAR 2013? read the plan before you create your own opinion just based off of "rumors"

President Obama knows what he is doing so let the president be. And i also agree with this statement:Republicans are upset because the amount of money they would pay in taxes is more that someone who is poor?

President Obama, not Mr. Obama first of all lets be respectful and honor the title this man has earned and worked for. I can respect that people develop opinions on how changes would effect their personal life but lets be real. Don't be consumed with the wrong things. Republicans are upset because the amount of money they would pay in taxes is more that someone who is poor? So instead of going on a vacation every six months they have to go once a year. But those who are living middle class lives or less are trying to determine what day of the week can they buy meat for their families to eat. And as far as taking care of the sick, what is wrong with that? Not everyone has been irresponsible with their health, some people can not help their circumstances and as a Christian it is taught to take care of those who can not take care of themselves. President Obama is very intelligent he knows what he is doing. The taxes and debt issues that the republicans have altered always to benefit them is over. Obama understands the corruption of secular law and is doing what he can to implement Christian law. Thank you PRESIDENT Obama.

If tens of millions of us whites are so bigoted and closed minded, how did Mr. Obama get elected?

I'm opposed to Obamacare for two reasons.

Despite what the government says, healthcare will become more, not less, expensive. Another huge bureaucracy will be created, which by its very nature, is inefficient. Parkinson's law states that governments will grow, regardless of the work that needs to be done. As governments grow, they become less efficient. I deal with that in my business. (I'm a CPA.) What the IRS was able to accomplish in 30 days, three years ago, now takes them 120 days. And their work is more slipshod.

I'm also opposed to Obamacare on a personal level. For a 64.5 year old man, I'm healthy as a race horse. Why should I subsidize someone who's made unhealthy health decisions?

Soon we will see whether the US Supreme Court, and US Constitution, provide any protection from the central dictate which leftists, like Obama, embrace so enthusiastically.

the affordable health care act often refferred to as obama care has restored my pride as an american. we are long overdue for such a program. we are the richest nation in the world and dead last or near last on health care. all other industrialized nations have some form of universal health care. we even have it here in at least one state.under the affordable health care act over 30 million people will be insured.
they are the same 30 million people who drive our costs up. if you and i owned a business and found we were losing 20% 30% 40% per month or more due to shop lifting. what would we do do ?
we would raise our prices and pass that on to our our regular customers. they would pay for the shoplifters. simple as that !. that's why our health care cost are double or more than any other country on the planet. instead of saying no!
figure out a way to pay for such a program.
    the canadians,swiss,english,germans,french,taiwanese,
japannese and many others have done just that.
if a millionaire has to pay an additional $1,000.00 a year to support such a program. he would see a reduction of maybe half that or more in reduced health care costs. because obamacare eliminates the shoplifters.
come on scrooge. the bible says you are your brothers keeper.
    i quote a biblical saying
if in the pursuit of wealth and power a man obides by the law of the land. he is deemed a success by society. even if he loses his compassion for the poor and less fortunate he is still deemed a succes by society.
buy as a human being he is a failure.
