The Time is Right for Reparations

For more than 45 million black Americans, there are many issues that unite or divide us. Undoubtedly, the issue of reparations for African people in general and in particular for black Americans is an issue began as a divisive topic but now receives support from a board cross-section of blacks in America.

Of course, there are some who wanted to table a national discussion of reparations in the aftermath of the election of President Barack H. Obama. Yet, there were many others who have argued that now is the most propitious time to accelerate the national dialogue about reparations because there is a "brother" in the White House.

This is a pivotal year because of the November elections. Any issue that is related to race will be used by those who oppose to President Obama. The goal of conservatives is to polarize American voters to vote their racial prejudice instead of voting their conscience about the future of the nation as an inclusive participatory democracy.

Given the recent polarization around the calls for equal justice and fairness in the Trayvon Martin killing, it would be naïve to think that race will not play a factor in the upcoming elections. The truth is race is just not a problem that crept onto the national scene accidentally. Race has been a social, economic, and political problem in America for more than 200 years. This is nothing new. What is new, however, is how the victims of racism see themselves, and how the perpetrators of racism view themselves.

Fortunately, renowned legal scholars such as Harvard's Charles Ogletree and others have articulated a rational defense for reparations, which would be therapeutic not only for black Americans, but also for all Americans.

I have consistently supported the call and the demand for reparations that go beyond whatever monetary compensation. Reparations are also about "repairing the damage" that was done to millions of African people, not just in America, but in the Caribbean, Central and South America, in Africa and throughout the rest of the world.

The United Nations is slowly working on establishing a permanent memorial to the victims of the infamous trans-Atlantic slave trade. In Washington, D.C., the construction of the African American Museum has begun. The United States Senate has issued an "apology" for slavery. And in my home state of North Carolina, Gov. Bev Perdue has just called for the state to spend $10.3 million in "reparations" to the victims of a vicious eugenics state program that sterilized thousands of people against their will. Most of those who were unjustly and savagely sterilized were black. Again, no amount of money could ever justify or rectify that awful and callous past. Still, Gov. Perdue's actions are the right steps at the right time. Healing is a long-term process. It takes time. The perpetrators of racism need a "repairing" of their minds and hearts.

It is interesting to note that even amidst a recovering of the American economy from the threshold of severe economic ruin, billions of dollars are being spent by candidates and campaigns for political office throughout the U.S. like they have unlimited money-trees to spend without reservation or limitation. The point here is so much of the "old money" and ingrained wealth of the nation came directly from the systematic economic exploitation of African people during 500 years of slavery and post-slavery institution-building. That is why it will take a tremendous calculation to determine a full accounting of the financial and human toll of the slave trade and its aftermath. Harper's magazine did a study that concluded that the U.S. owes black Americans more than $100 trillion in reparations. It is probably more than that.

This may not be the perfect time to raise this issue. Judging by the past, there is never a perfect time. Today is as good as any time. Let's work harder on the issue of reparations. We can begin by supporting the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America (NCOBRA), which will hold its national convention in Philadelphia, June 22-24. Reparations for black Americans should be supported by all Americans.

You have got to be kidding me. Tell me, what is so special about the black community that makes their historical exploitation so much more important than all other racial groups? What makes the Africans more deserving of reparations than the Native American? What make you more deserving of reparations over the Italians, the Irish, the Chinese, or any of the countless other races that have been enslaved throughout time?

As people have said countless times, you have never even so much as had a CONVERSATION with someone who was enslaved. You aren't entitled to a red penny and you have to be an arrogant, ignorant, imbecile to believe otherwise.

You are the kind of person that helps keep the racial divide alive and well, with outlandish claims like this. Do you have any idea how insulting it is to Caucasians everywhere that you would dare to try to hold us responsible for decisions we had no say in? Just because we benefit from the fruits of slavery we owe? Don't you also benefit from the same slavery? Don't you also benefit from the slaughter of Native Americans? Wouldn't that mean..in your own logic, that you should also be paying reparations?

Our society has been bending over backwards to right the wrongs of the past, despite not being responsible for it. Reparations were paid to you in the blood of those who fought in the civil war that won blacks their freedom. In the sweat of the whites who marched in the streets with them during the civil rights movement. In the blood of the whites who were killed in Mississippi during the civil rights movement to fight for your rights. Our reparations are still being paid to you today, with the disappointment of every college applicant that doesn't get in because the spot was filled by an affirmative action applicant that may be less qualified. The grants that are paid for, often by WHITE owned institutions that help African Americans attend that college.

All this despite the fact that no one of today's generation had anything to do with the enslavement of blacks. If you really want to do your people a favor, stop bringing up this stupid notion, which only serves to further remind everyone that a large number of black people see white people as nothing more than their enemy.

Whew! I am exhausted trying to figure out the math of who would get how much! I mean, there are geneology studies from 2002 that showed 30% of white adult Americans have at least 1 African ancestor. And surely that percentage is higher since the 2002 study because many children of black-white interracial marriages are now adults and would be included (the study also mentions US Census data that the number of those marriages quadrupled between 1960 and 1990).
When DNA among 3000 self-identified African-Americans was tested, the percentage of African DNA ranged from about 50% to 97% so we have to be sure the right people get the right share.
By the time we include the groups I already mentioned, spend the money for testing and geneolgy studies (to determine who had actual slave ancestors and are not simply decendents of non-slave Africans), and for each year that passes that more African-Americans are born, there won't be much left per person....better get right on that reparations task!
On the bright side, we could have each candidate take a personality test. Then we could see who has not had an ideal American experience because of the aftermath of slavery, and who deserves no reparations because he or she is simply not a self-driven individual and would be in no better state had slavery never existed. Because there are of course people of every race that are not living to their greatest, fullest potential; through no fault but their own.
Or.......maybe we could put our time and energy into pursuits that will actually happen and help America move forward...afterall our full title is "UNITED States of America" (no hypen in it).

We already paid reparations in the trillions with all the welfare programs meant to help black folks out of the hole they dug for themselves with government dependency.

We ow black nothing more than the opportunity every American has to be all they can be.

Reparations have already been paid many times over. If not for slave ancestors, the current U. S. black population could be residing in mud huts or on the run in Darfur to avoid ethnic cleansing or starving in Somalia.

Yes it's about time for the black community to pay extra taxes so they can pay the nation the reparations they owe for the increased crime, and cost of police and prisons needed for half the crime committed in the USA by only 6% of the population , namely black males.

The race-based demand for reparations is a monstrous fraud, and a perversion of all self-respecting moral codes. It is nothing more than a sophist's mugging, based on racist guilt-mongering.

The idea that an individual today (based on a subjective "race index of presumed guilt"), having no connection whatsoever with slavery (a 150 year old moral wrong) "owes" another living person of a different (but almost certainly mixed) race money because of a long dead third parties' acts is a racist meme to the core. It is a new way to promote theft.

I believe that it IS time to offer Reparations even though this generation had nothing to do with the slave practice. But, only if the recievers of said settlement agree in writing to renounce their American Citizenship and deport themselves to a African Nation of their choosing within 2 months. ''Reparations'' for ''Repatriation'' is a win-win for all.
