The Washington Mystics recently selected Natalie Novosel from the University of Notre Dame, and La Sondra Barrett from Louisiana State University (LSU), with the eighth and 10th overall picks in this year's WNBA Draft. The last time the Mystics had first round selections was in 2002.
In addition to those choices, the Mystics drafted Stacey Dales and Asjha Jones with the third and fourth overall picks.
"Natalie and LaSondra give us players with three-point shooting ability and versatility," said Trudi Lacey, general manager and head coach. "They also bring a team-first mentality, and we are excited to have them both on our roster."
Novosel, a 5-11 guard, was instrumental helping the Fighting Irish play in back-to-back national championships. While at Notre Dame, she averaged 10.7 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, led the Big East Conference in both three-point field goals and free throw percentage, and was named to the All-Big East first team. Novosel was also an Associated Press All-America honorable mention recipient and a Wade Trophy finalist. In 2011, she established a school record for the most free throws made (183).
"It's very intimidating sitting in that room. It was a big relief to get drafted. Washington was where I wanted to be picked," Novosel said on draft day. " I couldn't be happier. I know he Mystics had a tough season last year. I can't wait to get there and contribute and fulfill whatever role they need me to fulfill."
Barrett, a 6-2 forward, also a Wade Trophy finalist, was named to the All-SEC First Team. During her career, she averaged 12.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. She is one of only 17 players in LSU history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. Throughout her collegiate career, Barrett also earned various academic honors.
"I am excited and willing to do whatever it takes. I will bring competitive drive to any position in whatever the team needs me to do," she said. "I am very thankful for this opportunity and can't wait for training camp."
The Mystics also selected in the third round, guard Anjale Barrett (26th overall) from the University of Maryland, and guard Briana Gilbreath (35th overall) from the University of Southern California.
Celebrating their 15th season, the team will tip off the 2012 season Saturday, May 19 at Verizon Center against the Chicago Sky.
