For three days high school and local colleges from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia showcased their track and field talents before thousands at the 113th Annual Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
Local high school boys 4x100 sprinters from Suitland, Wise and Potomac – all in Prince Georges County- zipped past more than 650 schools with qualifying times of 41.45. For Potomac it was the 2nd best time; Suitland at 41.56, was the third best time; and Wise at 41.97, was the sixth best time in their respected heats. Overall, they secured eight qualifying spots for the Championship of America race held on Saturday, April 28.
Although none of the three won the Championship of America race; Wolmer's Boys of Kingston, Jamaica, won the race followed by two other schools from Jamaica, grabbing 2nd and 3rd place. Potomac finished 4th; Suitland 5th and Wise placed 7th.
This event has been all but conquered by schools from Jamaica and California in the past; and to have three schools advance to secure three of eight spots shows that the county is on the rise in the track and field department.
