The Washington Nationals defeated the Atlanta Braves, 5-3, in front of 23,708 fans at Nationals Park on Sat., July 4. The highlight of the game was Adam Dunn hitting his 300th home run.

“What made it special [later on] was the way we won the game,” Dunn said.

“That was awesome in the eighth inning. The way the crowd got into it. I don't know how many people were here. But from the seventh inning on, it was very loud and energetic. They made it great. It was awesome.”

“It says a lot about the way the team battled back,” Nationals manager Manny Acta said.

“They have been doing it the whole season. Forget about the record, these guys play hard. They put together good at-bats.”

The Nationals have won three straight home games on Sat., July 4, and improved to 3-2 on Independence Day since baseball returned to the nation’s capital in 2005. After the series with the Braves, the Nationals headed west for a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies.

Washington Informer Atlanta Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson allowed just one run on three hits and five walks in a career-high 7.0 innings. Hanson had his consecutive scoreless innings streak halted at 26 when he surrendered Adam Dunn’s 300th career homer in the seventh inning. “It was just over the plate,” Hanson said. “It was supposed to be a fastball inside, but I left it over the plate, and he let me know.
