D.C. United Defeats FC Dallas, 2-0
D.C. United defeated FC Dallas 2-0 .in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play on Wed. April 22 night before a crowd of 5,163 at RFK Stadium. Coach Tom Soehn gave opportunities to the youngsters and then watched them outplay the opponents.

“I’ve said from the beginning that we have a deep team and it was fun to get them on the field and let them show what they’re about, their character; the qualities of why we brought some of them here. It’s probably one of the deepest teams I’ve coached. So I have confidence in them, because they’ve shown me every day,” Soehn said.

Rookie Chris Pontius directed a pass through a sea of players and into the path of the Brazilian midfielder, who protected the ball from defender Michael Dello-Russo and struck a shot over the advancing goalie Ray Burse. Fred said, “Getting the ball past the goalkeeper was the easy part.”
