DETROIT (AP) -- North Carolina beat Michigan State 89-72 to win its fifth NCAA basketball championship. Ty Lawson led a record-setting first half and the Tar Heels coasted to an easy victory Monday night at Ford Field.

The Tar Heels (34-4) started the season as the unanimous No. 1 pick and breezed through the NCAA tournament. They became the first team to win all six games by double digits since Duke in 2001.

Lawson finished with 21 points and eight steals for coach Roy Williams' team.

Goran Suton had 17 points and 11 rebounds for Michigan State (31-7). The Spartans lost for the first time in three championship game appearances.

North Carolina beat Michigan State 98-63 on the same court on Dec. 3.
