Howard University’s new lacrosse coach, UVA grad Jessica Morgan, arrived two weeks ago to much anticipation. When the former head coach resigned after just one year, several team members said they felt discouraged and frustrated.

“I got the call eight months ago. I knew upon accepting the position that the program itself was struggling, disorganized and lacked proper direction. But I believed that it had a lot of potential, and if put into the right hands, could develop into a very successful one,” Morgan said.

Despite the program’s lack of recognition and trouble recruiting players, Morgan plans to seek out and bring in talent to further build the program. She believes that the name itself, Howard University, is a viable resource.

“Personally, if Howard’s program existed when I was initially being recruited by colleges, I would have come here,” Morgan said. “It’s such a respectable university and I would have been the third generation in my family to attend the school. We have to use the logo as a recruitment strategy because girls do want to come here.
