DPR Youth Football Team Advances to Second Round of National Championships

On Sunday, December 5, a team from the DC Department of Parks and Recreation's (DPR) Pop Warner Football League advanced to the second round of the Pop Warner Football Super Bowl.

The Watkins Hornets defeated the Southfield Falcons from Michigan with a score of 34 - 0 to advance to the next stage of the championship round for the first time in DPR history.

The Hornets play again on Wednesday, December 9 against the Arlington Thunder from Arlington, TX at 11am at the Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. A victory on Wednesday would send the Hornets to the semifinal game of the National Championships for the first time in DPR history.

The Pop Warner Super Bowl attracts teams from across the nation in eight different regions spanning from the District all the way to Hawaii.Jess Aguirre, DPR Interim Director stated, "DPR is very proud of the Watkins team, coaching staff, and parents. The dedication to athletics and sports is productive to everyone involved."

The Pop Warner League is the only football program in the nation that requires youth athletes to maintain academic standards. Over half of the youth athletes on the Hornets football team maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average.
