In a city starving for the hope a title can bring, the wait is over. Look no further than Southeast D.C. at Watkins Elementary School where you will find a group of winners, as the Watkins Hornets became the 2009 pee-wee division football national champions.

On Sat., Dec. 12, the Watkins Hornets won the championship in Orlando Florida at the Disney€s Wide World of Sports Complex.

€€It was an uplifting experience to see my son complete something that he wanted to do, and to follow him and back him up,€ said Donald Jordan, whose son Demarcus is a player on the Hornets football team.

€So often inner city kids are marked by their short comings but today the rain gave way to a rainbow. To see the mayor, various city officials and community members come together to praise these kids for all their hard work, it brought to mind the saying €it takes a village to raise a child€€ Jordan said.

Hornets€ head coach Delante Hellams thanked the parents and coaches who he said made the championship run possible, and thanked the young football players for their hard work and dedication. Hellams, who is affectionately known as Coach Lody, praised his players first for their academic commitments first and athletic achievements second.
