VITA Program Provides Assistance for Filing 2008 Taxes
Free tax preparation is available to assist Prince George€s County residents with basic income tax returns, including free electronic filing, through the Prince George€s Community College Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. County residents with annual incomes of $55,000 or less, as of 2008, are eligible for the free assistance. Services begin Feb. 10-April 4 on Tuesdays from 6-9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Center for Advanced Technology, formerly the High Technology Center, on the main campus of the Prince George€s Community College.
Taxpayers who need assistance should bring their social security cards and any dependents; prior year tax returns, if available; a voided check for direct deposit of refunds; and all other tax documents including W-2 forms, social security statements and 1099 forms.
The VITA program provides free tax services and also trains tax preparers who volunteer to work in the program. Through VITA, tax preparers receive Internal Revenue Service certification and gain valuable professional experience.
Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcomed. For additional information or to schedule an appointment call 301-583-5254.
