Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson and Council Chair Marilynn Bland (District 9) signed a resolution today that will temporarily change the rates charged by taxicab drivers for a period of 90 days. Effective Jan. 16, the Basic Rate for taxicabs will change from $1.50 to $3.00 up to the first one-seventh of a mile or part thereof traveled and $.25 for every additional one-seventh of a mile. In addition, the Waiting Time Charge will change from $.20 to $.25 for each 60 seconds the vehicle is stopped or operating at a speed under 12 miles per hour. The Emergency Fuel Cost Surcharge has expired and passengers should no longer be charged that $2.00 fee. "We enacted this legislation to ensure that County taxicab drivers would make a living wage and to make our rates more comparable to surrounding jurisdictions," Johnson said.
