The community-minded congregation of Matthews Memorial Baptist Church is hosting €The First Annual Community Health and Resource Fair€ titled €Carnival of Hope€ to address the needs and concerns of the residents of the East of the River on Sat., July 18.
€Carnival of Hope is about bringing awareness to our beloved people of our blessed community about the importance of taking care of our minds, bodies and souls. It is important that the church be active in the community and host annual special events,€ said Bishop Charles Matthews.
€We have partnered with numerous resources (over 30 businesses and organizations) to make this a fun-filled day with the emphasis on health and resource. Also, we want folks to discover we have a big heart,€ Matthews added.
Program coordinator Nadia Washington said this event will prove beneficial to the Ward 8 community.
€Carnival of Hope is about unifying our community while focusing specifically on our health and valuable resources within Ward 8,€ Washington said.
Besides free health screenings, individuals and families will learn financial planning with the U.S. Treasury Dept. Credit Union, Chevy Chase Bank, and PNC Bank. Job search and placement will be the focus of The Opportunities Industrialization Center D.C., Washington, D.C. Outreach and JobCorps.
Evelyn Turner, program director of the church€s family center, €Urban Family€s House of Hope,€ that houses its €Family to Family Mentoring Program,€ said providing community service is not new for the church.
€We have been providing service for over 11 years for the community and this will become an annual event to make individuals and families€ lives better,€ Turner said.
€Carnival of Hope€ will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sat., July 18 at Matthews Memorial Baptist Church in Southeast. For more information call 202-678-4024 or visit www.mmbcdc.org.
