When Melvin Robinson, Jr., had to assume the pastorate of the Master€s Child Church 10 years ago at age 31, it was a fledgling congregation of 45 men and women who expressed their dedication to €seeking to grow in the grace and knowledge of God€. Initially, Robinson expressed €reluctance€ about accepting the leadership of the ministry that his father, Bishop Melvin Robinson Sr., had founded 19 years earlier.
€My father had already told me about the call on my life. I didn€t see it, but he saw it,€ Robinson said.
Today, the Master€s Child Church has a membership of 700 and occupies a 19,000 square foot building in District Heights, Md. More than 800 people gathered in the church€s sanctuary on Sun., July 19 to celebrate with Bishop Robinson on his 10th anniversary as pastor. The service featured musical selections by the Master€s Child Church choir with Evangelist Monique Walker, the Ebenezer African Methodist Episcopal Church Adult Choir with soloist Trent Jones, and gospel recording artist Evangelist Kim Burrell. The message was delivered by Ebenezer€s Rev. Dr. Grainger Browning.
Browning encouraged the congregation and Bishop Robinson to know that God had chosen, anointed, and appointed Robinson. Browning said Robinson was doing a tremendous work in Prince George€s County.
€God will set you on fire. He will consecrate you and set you aside for a specific work,€ Browning said. €God is ready to pour his Spirit on the Master€s Child Church. We want you to know that the best is yet to come.€
When Robinson took over the leadership of the church during his father€s illness, there were members who made the transition smooth.
€With the help of God it was so easy,€ said Rev. Vera Williams, senior associate pastor of the church. €Our former pastor prepared us for the transition, so it was smooth.€
Williams, who has been with the ministry 33 years, has seen the growth of her pastor since he was eight. She watched him grow from playing the drums to become Minister of Music to pastor.
€I€ve seen the hand of God on his life even as he matured into the pastor he is today,€ Williams said.
