Faculty Art Exhibition Opens at Bowie State

€Since we talk the talk, we like to be able to walk the walk,€ says Bowie State University gallery director Clayton Lang. Lang, who is also an assistant professor of studio art and art history, feels it is very important for the art faculty at BSU to be practicing artists in addition to their teaching. He feels that is very difficult to instruct students to do something when the instructors are not doing it themselves.
The 2009 Faculty Art Exhibition is on display in the Amos White IV Gallery of Art in the Martin Luther King Communication Arts Center through Wed. March 11. Included in the exhibition are faculty artists George Tuggle, Tewodress M. Melchishua, Phaedra Byrd, Valerie Chisholm, Robert Ward, E. Clark Mester, Clayton Lang, and Gina Marie Lewis.

Lewis, whose art installation piece is titled €Conversation among Blues Women,€ displays eight face cast masks of women that she knows. €It visually represents the archetype of the blues woman. She is the transcendent woman of African decent. I€m looking at a concept of blues woman, not necessarily the blues singers or women who are sung about in blues songs, but rather the women who are represented in those songs,€ explains Lewis.

This is the third faculty exhibit since 2004 when Lang became director of the Amos White IV Gallery of Art. At the beginning of this year€s reception Lang wanted to do something new, a galley talk, giving each artist an opportunity to share with the audience their intent in the creation of their work, and why they did it. €Art is appreciated so much more when the viewer is informed,€ says Lang.

Lang feels exhibitions at the Bowie State University€s gallery of art are an essential aspect of their overall art program. He has noticed that a lot of his students have been very interested in what he has been doing with the gallery and have become interested in looking at museum studies as a career, which Lang says €is underrepresented in our community.€

The gallery is open Monday & Wednesday 10:00 A.M. €" 7:00 P.M, Tuesday & Thursday 12:00 P.M €" 4:30 P.M., and Sunday 12:00 P.M - 7:00P.M. For more information, call 301 860 3763.
