Everybody Wins! DC (EW!DC) and CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield (CareFirst) recently launched the innovative Healthy Month Initiative at Walker Jones Educational Center, located at 110 L Street NW to a group of volunteer Reading Mentors and their students. The literacy and wellness program will provide more than 1,000 students across the Washington Metropolitan Area with fun and helpful health related resources designed to promote healthy lifestyles.
Walker Jones Educational Center Principal Dr. Jeffrey Grant regaled the audience with his reading of €Arthur€s Chicken Pox€ and recognized the corporate partners in attendance for creating an invaluable support network for his students to start the event.
Dr. Floretta Dukes McKenzie, CareFirst Board Member, encouraged the students to utilize the books, bags and other materials they receive through the initiative to motivate their friends and family to lead healthier lifestyles.
€Adding a fun health and wellness component to our existing mentoring and literacy program just makes sense. Our mentors and mentees have great relationships rooted in an interest in instilling a love of reading, learning and fostering a sense of self-esteem.
CareFirst€s contribution will provide the resources to advance meaningful health related discussions on such issues as successful health related strategies employed by their Reading Mentors, which will hopefully produce meaningful short and long term impacts.€-- Everybody Wins! DC Executive Director Mary Salander.
The Healthy Month Initiative will reach more than 1,000 students in 14 Power Lunch Schools at Title I public elementary schools. Health education books will be prominently displayed during in-school program activities and CareFirst€s generous contribution will allow each child to receive two free health-inspired books.
Corporate and community leaders from Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz, PC and the Office of the Chancellor of the District of Columbia as well as other Power Lunch Partner groups were in attendance for the event.
