In a tale of two programs going into different directions, the Bulldogs of South Carolina State clinched their second consecutive MEAC title with a 43-13 win over Howard at Greene Stadium before a crowd of 5,108.
€ We wanted to take away the run and put them in passing situations € said Howard coach Carey Bailey. State started the scoring with a 44 yard field goal by sophmore Blake Erickson. That was followed up with a 28 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Cam Long to wide receiver Terrance Smith with 3:20 remaining in the first quarter.
€ They gave us some different looks from what we had seen on film State quarterback Cam Long said. € We then decided to get the ball to Chris Massey,€ said Long who then scored on a 14 -yard pass with 10:42 remaining in the second quarter.
The Bison put six points on the board with field goals of 37 and 35 yards from senior Dennis Wiehberg. The second feld goal came with no time remaining in the first half. That field goal allowed Howard to cut State€s lead to 22-6 at the half.
The second half saw the Bison make the same mistakes which have plagued them all season. Interceptions and some missed completions continue to haunt the Bison offense.
€ We wanted to mix the run and the pass € said State head coach Oliver Pugh. € We were not consistent running the football the way we like too€ said Pugh.
Long threw his second touchdown pass of the day to Massey a four yarder with 4:14 remaining in the third quarter. Coach Pugh€s game plan was to run a balanced offense, and it was a job well done. The Bulldogs ran the ball 36 times and threw 34 passes. Long finished his afternoon 21-33-180 yards and 3 touchdown passes.
All-American candidate tailback senior William Ford completed State€s scoring with a 64 -yard run up the middle to make the score 43-6 with 6:26 remaining in the contest. Ford finished the day with 108 yards on 16 carries.
Bison wide receiver sophomore Willie Carter, who has been a bright spot all season, caught a 38 -yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Floyd Haigler to complete the scoring at 43-13.
"They are not ranked the number ten team in the nation for nothing€ said coach Bailey. The Bison dfense played well in spots but were clearly outclassed in this MEAC conference contest against the Bulldogs. The Bison fell to 2-7 , 0-6 in MEAC play.
The Bulldogs of South Carolina State improved to 8-1, 6-0 in conference play. State has been ranked number ten the past two weeks in the MEAC coahes poll and several teams are in front of them in this week€s poll.
"Richmond, William & Mary, and Villanova have some big games coming up€ said coach Pugh. Howard will hosts Bethune-Cookman on Friday, Nov. 13. The kickoff is set for 1pm. State will host Morgan State at 1:30.
