Minority Business Opportunities Commission Confrims New Members

Prince George€s County Executive Jack Johnson€s nominees for the Minority Business Opportunities Commission were confirmed by the County Council on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

The Commission is responsible for monitoring the efforts of county government in procuring goods and services from minority business enterprises through the implementation of and compliance with the county's Minority Business Opportunities Program.

The Commission can also recommend changes in county procurement policies, programs, and practices and recommend legislation designed to better enable the county to achieve the goals stated in the County Code.

Cynthia Brown, Lenox Coles, Henry Harris, Anthony Hill, Tiffany Hollinger, Yonelle Moore, Essien-Ita Offiong and Angel Perez were sworn in immediately following their confirmation hearing.

Brown, a resident of Mitchellville, retired after 31 years with the U.S. Department of Treasury where she worked as a National Bank Examiner certifying the soundness and safety of national banks and directed a staff of national bank examiners and administrative professionals.

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Norfolk State University. She will serve as a County Council representative.

A resident of Lanham, Coles is a Contracting Officer with the U.S. Department of Education where he represents the Department in contracting and procurement.

He has substantial experience working with small and minority businesses in his role at the Department of Education which includes serving as Acting Head of the Office of Small Business Utilization. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of Maryland at Eastern Shore.

Harris, a resident of Fort Washington, is the President of the Spirit Telecommunications Company and the Founder of the Christian Internet Radio Service. He earned an Associate€s degree in Business Management from Prince George€s Community College. Mr. Harris is a member of the South County Economic Development Association. He will serve as a County Council representative.

A resident of Brandywine, Hill is a Community Relations/Community Supervision Officer with the District of Columbia€s Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency where he assists offenders in readapting to society through placement in reentry programs.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice/Corrections from Langston University, Criminal Justice Specialist Certification from Central State University and a Paralegal Certificate from the National Public Law Training Center. He will serve as a County Council Representative.

Hollinger, a resident of Upper Marlboro, is the Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Group, LLC, a financial planning firm located in Largo. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the Ohio State University and a Certified Financial Planning Certificate from Georgetown University.

Moore is an Attorney who specializes in general practice law. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of the District of Columbia and a Juris Doctor degree from the Pepperdine University School of Law. She is completing coursework for a Master of Public Administration degree at Strayer University.

A resident of Laurel, Offiong is a July 2009 graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. He served as an intern in the Office of the County Executive where he assisted with assignments involving international trade, economic development and the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC). He will serve as the Citizen Representative.

Perez, a resident of Bowie, is the Director of the Division of Administrative Services at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics where he manages procurement, business management, security, safety and records management services at the Agency. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from the University of Maryland. He will serve as the Chairman of the Commission.
