Prince George€s County Health Department Commemorates World AIDS Day

The Prince George €s County Health Department in collaboration with the University of Maryland School of Public Health, and the Mayor of Seat Pleasant will sponsor a World AIDS Day event on Tuesday, December 1 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at University of Maryland €s Nyumburu Cultural Center .

World AIDS Day is an international day of action, which occurs each year on December 1 to raise awareness of the global HIV/AIDS epidemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and to reduce the spread of the disease through education.This year€s international theme is Universal Access and Human Rights.Prince George €s County has the second highest number of cases for both HIV and AIDS in the state of Maryland .

Nationally it is estimated that there are 40,000 new HIV infections a year. This year€s World AIDS Day event will target young people in an effort to help prevent new cases by heightening awareness and providing education.
