The Fayetteville State University defense intercepted five Bowie State University passes and turned that into a 30-20 victory. The designated non-conference game puts the Fayetteville State and Bowie State records at 1-2 on the year.
After both teams punted on their first two possessions, Fayetteville Broncos running back Richard Medlin capped off a seven-play, 39-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run, giving FSU a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Bowie State junior running back Rodney Webb (Baltimore, Md., Milford Mill Academy) scored the first of his three touchdowns of the afternoon in the second quarter, pounding in from one yard out. However, the point after by sophomore kicker/punter Michael Gagne was blocked. Fayetteville State place kicker Austin Turner gave the Broncos a four point advantage to make the score 10-6 when he booted in a 49-yard field goal.
Fayetteville State added six more to the scoreboard with only 38 seconds left before halftime after cornerback Joshua Wilkins intercepted a pass from BSU freshman quarterback Tyrae Reid, Jr. (Baltimore, Md., Baltimore Polytechnic) at the FSU three and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown.
Turner made his second field goal attempt of the game in the third quarter, increasing Fayetteville State's lead to 20-6. Bowie State cut the Broncos€ lead to seven, 20-13, in the third quarter. But Turner€s 25-yard field goal and wide receiver Bobby Wilder's touchdown gave FSU a 30-13 lead with 7:59 remaining in the game. Webb would add his third touchdown for the Bulldogs to conclude the scoring late in the fourth quarter.
€We outplayed them in just about every statistical category, but you can't turn the ball over the way we did today and expect to win,€ said Bowie State first-year coach Damon Wilson. €Even though we didn€t get the result we wanted, I€m happy with the play of our freshman quarterback.€
Reid threw for a team season-high 299 yards, completing 19-of-38 passes.
Fayetteville State's quarterback Benjamin Williams completed 14-of-29 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown. Williams€ passes went to five different receivers, with Wilder catching the lone touchdown from seven yards out.
Bowie State racked up a season-high 440 yards in total offense, with Webb leading the ground game with 110 yards on 24 carries and three touchdowns. Williams led Fayetteville State€s Broncos with 168 passing yards, completing 14 of 29.
Sophomore wide receiver Clifton Budd (Silver Spring, Md., Sherwood) recorded a Bowie State career-high 151 reception yards on seven catches. The BSU Bulldogs defense was led by juniors linebacker Kyle Jackson (Baltimore, Md., Edmondson) and defensive back Terence Peete, Jr. (Memphis, Tenn., Northwest) with nine and eight tackles each.
