Congresswoman Donna Edwards (D-MD) announced today she has joined the Maryland Democratic Party's Diversity Leadership Council (DLC), a new initiative to promote diversity and energize activists across the state.

Congresswoman Edwards joined Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD), Lt. Governor Anthony Brown, Maryland Democratic Party Chair Susan W. Turnbull, and other DLC members to announce the new program. The DLC will represent Maryland's African-American, Latino, Asian & Pacific Islander American, Continental African, Veterans, Military Families, Women, and LGBT communities.

"As the first African American woman to represent the state of Maryland in the United States Congress, I understand the importance of promoting diversity as one of our greatest strenghts," said Congresswoman Edwards.

"By embracing the unique diversity we enjoy across the state, we strengthen bonds between the many cultural and social communities, increase communication and understanding, and learn to work more effectively together to achieve our shared goals. I am excited for this opportunity and look forward to working with the other members of the Diversity Leadership Council in this effort."
