RAMS BATTER PANTHERS IN SEASON OPENER
HIGH POINT, NC-Octavious Hawkins passed for 207 yards and two touchdowns as Winston-Salem State rolled up 393 yards of total offense in the Rams' 47-13 season opening win over the Virginia Union Panthers last night in High Point.
Winston-Salem State took control of the game early, scoring on their first three possessions to jump out to a 17-0 lead after one quarter. A two-yard touchdown run by Nicholas Cooper and a 36-yard field goal by Landon Thayer as time expired in the second quarter pushed the Rams' lead to 27-0 at halftime.
The Rams' dominance would continue in the third quarter as they extended their lead to 40-0 on a 47-yard touchdown pass from Hawkins to Tevin Brantley and Cooper's second rushing touchdown of the evening.
Virginia Union scored their first touchdown of the 2010 season with 1:03 left in the third quarter when quarterback Aris McGlone-English tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Cheikh Gadiaga to avoid the shutout. Both teams added touchdowns in the fourth quarter for the game's final margin.
In addition to Hawkins' solid outing, the Rams also got strong offensive support from Brantley and fellow receiver Dominique Fitzgerald who combined to catch twelve passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns and Cooper who rushed for 73 yards to go along with his two touchdowns. Winston-Salem's defense also had a huge day, limiting the Panthers to 56 rushing yards, recording five sacks and forcing four fumbles.
Next week the Rams (1-0) will travel to Greensboro to take on FCS opponent North Carolina A&T, while Virginia Union (0-1) will look to rebound against Southern Division contender Shaw in Raleigh.
